Corporate wellness beyond the gimmicks
Motivating your team is no easy task, in this goal driven world we live in, it's never been more important to invest in your team and give them a gift of time out and relaxation.
There are so many options from team building days to regular online yoga sessions and weekend incentive trips but deciding what suits your group best can be so confusing.
Here's our checklist to making your investment go far and your staff feel truly valued
Align your organisation's policies with your calendar of events
Being a company with a clear wellness policy is paramount to making your company stand out. It's the way the world is going and can be a huge selling point during recruitment stages. Your staff spend a large percentage of their lives at work and they will certainly be more productive and loyal if they feel the company they work for genuinely cares for their health and wellbeing. Once the policy is in place the events have a clear focus and your staff know what to expect from you
What`s the goal of the event?
Whether it`s an afternoon online or a weekend incentive trip, get clear on what the purpose of the event is. Are you trying to motivate, reward or train your team? Are you truly concerned for your people`s wellbeing on a daily basis or are you conducting annual training sessions with a twist?
Know your audience
Many people are wary of yoga and meditation or sport of any kind. However, many will love it and will be up for the challenge. Within any group you will have a range of sedentary to very active people and we never want to make anyone feel uncomfortable or excluded. This can be done in two ways
Choose facilitators and trainers who are agile and can include all ability levels
Create activities with various roles which pull on the strengths of diverse team members
Understand the value of the activities
You're looking for something fun and impressive, but does it do what you need it to do? Beer yoga might sound fun but will it really help your team relax and let go of stress? (the answer is… definitely not) Don`t fall for gimmicks or celebrity facilitators just because it looks impressive, think about what your staff need and align your choice of activities with that
Let your people be people
Value the time your team are giving up to attend such an event. Design your event to meet the needs of your people, make it as easy as possible for them to travel, feed them well keeping in mind people's dietary needs and make sure they have the space to be who they are outside of their usual work role. Not everyone will enjoy the same things and thats ok, know who will attend and what feeds their soul
Live happily ever after
So you had a wonderful event, you may have introduced new ideas and experiences to your staff that made them feel great, now what?
Ask for feedback, knowing what resonated most with your people will help you to continue offering useful tools and design future events
Reading list suggestions can be sent out to give people the opportunity to dive deeper into new practices on their own time
Discounted membership packages to gyms and yoga studios, most places offer a corporate membership which costs you nothing and has great value for your staff
Free membership to online apps such as Headspace, a small cost for a big return. Imagine a team of clear and calm thinkers who have no desire for gossip, resentment or negative vibes at the office. What a wonderful world it could be!
